On May 11, 2006, the Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center (BMS) held a dedication ceremony during which the BMS Life & Wellness Center, one of the Health Center’s seven service sites, was renamed in honor of Joseph K. Francois, the late founding executive director of BMS.

The BMS Life & Wellness Center; Joseph K. Francois Pavilion, as the building is now called, stands at its 408 Rockaway Avenue location in Brownsville as a monument to Mr. Francois’ dedication to improving the health status of the community’s residents. The three-story building also symbolizes the Health Center’s mission and campaign to address the numerous chronic illnesses that plague Central Brooklyn through innovative wellness initiatives aimed at addressing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and asthma.

The BMS Life & Wellness Center; Joseph K. Francois Pavilion currently houses a variety of wellness programs, including our Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) program, nutritional counseling, behavior modification/risk reduction counseling, HIV prevention, and individual case management. Plans are in the works to transform the currently vacant ground floor and basement of the building into a state-of-the-art fitness facility that will be directly linked to the Health Center’s primary care and specialized services.


In 2002, BMS launched a capital campaign to raise funding to renovate the building that now houses the Life & Wellness Center.
